Dama Branca
James Roberts walked in the icy cold night. As he came around a turn in the road he was surprised to see a woman walking ahead of him. She was dressed in a long white gown; she was not wearing a coat. James hurried to catch up to her and offered her his cloak. The woman smiled as he placed it around her shoulders.’
“Where are you headed?” he asked as they walked towards town past the graveyard.
“Home sir.” She answered with a smile.
James walked with her until they came to a house on the corner of the square. She turned smiled and took his hand in hers.
“Thank you for the use of your cloak and for seeing me home.” She said as she turned the knob of the door and stepped inside.
James waved and hurried home where he told his brother about the beautiful woman he walked home. How her eyes sparkled, and her smile lit up the night. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
The following evening there was a dance, James looked for the woman from the night before. A few minutes later she entered the room. She was so attractive that everyone wanted to meet and dance with her. She danced and danced, her gown twirling around her as if she were floating on air and was having a wonderful time.
James took her hand and whirled her around in time to the music. After the song finished they went outside and walked in the garden. James picked a rose and pinned it to her gown.
As the clock chimed midnight she turned and left the dance. James followed after her wanting to know her name, and if he may call on her. Outside he looked around but did not see her anywhere. He decided he would go to her house the next morning.
James knocked on the door of the house. The curtain over the window fluttered as a woman answered the door, “may I help you?”
“May I speak to your daughter? She was at the dance last night; I would like to call upon her,”
The woman frowned at James, “My daughter has been dead for the last four years. She was killed in a car accident on her way to a dance.”….
